There’s a rule of thumb in teaching writing that the semicolon should just plain be avoided. One editor told me it comes off as too “scholarly,” which is polite-speak for “nerdy.” A writer friend with an extensive newsletter likes to humourously inform newer writers that they only get two semicolons in their entire career, ever.
