The Semicolon, Demystified

There’s a rule of thumb in teaching writing that the semicolon should just plain be avoided. One editor told me it comes off as too “scholarly,” which is polite-speak for “nerdy.” A writer friend with an extensive newsletter likes to humourously inform newer writers that they only get two semicolons in their entire career, ever.

This is because the semicolon is prone to misunderstanding and abuse. Luckily, we have The Oatmeal to restore wisdom and balance to the writing craft universe. Click here to see the Semicolon Infographic.
